Shaquille O'Neal was expected to play in Miami's game against the Sacramento Kings on Thursday night after participating in the Heat's morning shootaround. O'Neal, who has a bruised left calf, also made it through a brief practice on Wednesday. He didn't speak to reporters after the shootaround, but coach Stan Van Gundy thinks the superstar center is ready for a busy stretch in California.

Two nifty assists by O'Neal sparked a 13-point run late in the fourth quarter by the Heat, who won their eighth game in a row, beating the Orlando Magic 117-107 Sunday night. "I found my shooters a couple of times,'' O'Neal said. "They know if they get open, I'm going to hit them for the high-percentage shot.''

Iverson goes off in Sixers win

Michigan State Spartans Good, Not Great?
Michigan State's recent loss to Kansas may point out a hidden fault in Tom Izzo's Spartans: they're good, but not great. Since their national championship in 2000 led by Mateen Cleaves and Morris Peterson, the Spartans have been consistent but rarely brilliant. Clearly the NBA has been the culprit, taking many stars early (Zach Randolph, Jason Richardson). But the Kansas loss made one thing very clear. Izzo's corn-fed boys are tough and strong but that may not be enough in today's college game. Izzo wants tough, consistent ballplayers who rebound well and don't make mistakes. Are they athletic enough to match up with the elite college teams? They didn't look that way against Kansas. The Spartans' style of play may get them close to the top but a more athletic team on a roll will take the Spartans when it comes to crunch time.

Kings Fans - the League's Whiniest?
Kings fans are noted for being the NBA's most supportive and Arco Arena has gained notoriety for being the loudest around. But is that changing? After the team's 3-3 start fans were already grumbling to fire Rick Adelman, then sitting on their hands during games. Broadcaster Grant Napear publicly complains that he hates going to work after a Kings' loss because of all the dire warnings of collapse. And all of this without MVP candidate Chris Webber. With the Kings back on a winning streak all is well in King-dom, but for how long? Anyone in Sacramento knows they're only a loss away from some major league whining. Has Vlade Divac somehow infected the city? Sacramento has the distinction of being not only a small town, but having only one professional team. Fans need to grow up and realize that all teams, like all women, have their cycles.
