Arnold’s Double Whammy
Arnold Schwarzenegger is known in Hollywood for having total control over any set he works on. But at the Thursday premiere of his flashy bus tour, the “California Comeback Express,” unruly extras threatened to upset the plot line of his campaign finale.

Arnie sorry for past indiscretions
Movie star-turned-wanna-be-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger apologised for behaving inappropriately toward women in the past.

However the apology cut no ice with many women's groups who would like to see the Hollywood star quit from the race to become California's governor.

The Republican action hero's apology came after allegations emerged that he groped and harassed colleagues and made crude sexual comments. The claims appeared on the front page of The Los Angeles Times.

California women flex their political muscle
Who will decide California? The one constituency that's already demonstrated its clout -- women.

If you read the Los Angeles Times, you have seen a disturbing account of alleged unwanted sexual advances by Arnold Schwarzenegger, the front-runner in the recall campaign for governor. How did Schwarzenegger become the front-runner? Because of women. According to polls, men have always favored getting rid of Gov. Gray Davis.

But a month ago, women opposed recalling the governor. That made the outcome of the recall vote too close to call. As of early this week, however, women had turned against Davis. His recall was beginning to look like a done deal. Who did women favor to replace Davis?

130-odd candidates, and we have to write in somebody
At the end of the ballot is a space for write-ins, a place for our silent scream of protest. A suggestion for those of you of like mind: Choose from our nation's gloried past the person -- a Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr., Reagan, JFK, anyone will do -- who best personifies the performance we lack but now sorely need. Then write in the name and send it off with the silent command -- "Here, this is what leadership looks like and what we expect from you." I've always been partial to Eisenhower. Who's your choice?

Crazy as usual for California CIO
Imagine a typical day in the life of California Chief Information officer (CIO) J. Clark Kelso.

The state department of IT that Governor Gray Davis picked him to clean up? Disbanded. The state's budget? A US$100 billion mess, balanced through billions in borrowing, slashed spending and new fees. And his job security? As far as Kelso knows, Arnold Schwarzenegger soon could be his new boss, thanks to a free-for-all gubernatorial recall vote set for Oct. 7. And that's if the new governor keeps him on.

Gray Davis And Dianne Feinstein On Schwarzenegger Allegations
Governor Davis, who is fighting for his job against Schwarzenegger, calls the reported Hitler remark "particularly offensive." Davis tells ABC's "Good Morning America" that any decent American should be offended.

Feinstein calls the reported comment "appalling." She also tells NBC's "Today" show that personal behavior does affect people in public office. Feinstein has been an opponent of the recall drive.

From a blue-collar beginning to a chance to run California
Cruz Bustamante knows hard work.

At least, that's the way he tells it. No one can dispute that the lieutenant governor who is the only major Democratic replacement candidate in the Oct. 7 election has a remarkable story.

If voters recall the incumbent, then the unassuming grandson of Mexican immigrants who grew up toiling in the fields of the Central Valley could become California's first Latino governor in over a century.

"He kind of affirms the American way and the great opportunity this society affords," said Carole Migden, chairwoman of the state Board of Equalization.

Tom McClintock's big little secret
While we know a great deal about Sen. McClintock's political positions, we don't know much about John Stoos, and what his vision is for California. Stoos is not your ordinary right-wing ideologue: He is a politically savvy campaign strategist who has worked the California political landscape for more than 20 years. He was a former vice-president of the right-wing California Republican Assembly and helped engineer the takeover of California's Republican Party by Christian fundamentalists. Stoos has been a key player in the recall movement, coordinating the DavisRecall.com campaign. According to The Hill, "the Newspaper for and about the U.S. Congress," Stoos was active with People's Advocate, "the group that launched the recall effort earlier this year."

Stoos has a close, long-term association with Chalcedon, a Vallecito, Ca.-based Christian Reconstructionist organization. He is a regular contributor to its flagship publication, the Chalcedon Report, "the extended voice of the most important Christian theocratic theologian of the twentieth century, the late R. J. Rushdoony," said Frederick Clarkson, author of the highly acclaimed book "Eternal Hostility: The Struggle Between Theocracy And Democracy" (Common Courage Press, 1997).

Bustamante takes campaign to college campuses
As Arnold Schwarzenegger began his high-profile bus tour Thursday, Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante stumped at lower-key events designed to highlight his support for overturning recent community college cuts and investing in the state's future.

Noting that 123,000 fewer students will attend community colleges this year because of recent fee hikes, Bustamante said, "That's outrageous. It's short-sighted. It lacks vision."

Another name on the list: Arianna Huffington, the TV commentator and columnist who recently abandoned her independent candidacy in the election.

Edward Kennedy Tells Gray Davis to Resign; Why? No Need for Recall; Good News is No Need for New Taxes
The Kennedy for Governor Campaign learned from the Secretary of State's Notary Division that both Gray Davis and Cruz Bustamante do not possess Official Bonds of Office. The implications of this may be staggering.

Edward Kennedy said again today "For 33 days, now I am told by the concentrated media that I am a clown in a circus but it seems to me that the professional politicians may be the clowns for failing to obey basic rules of their jobs."

Kennedy continued, "I could be wrong, but it seems to us that I deserve a response from both the current Governor and Lieutenant Governor. Based on the Constitution and the California Government Code no Official Bond of Office means that their Offices are vacant. Vacant Office of Governor means simply that both Davis and Bustamante never were in office. Therefore, for example, we are debt free because the Governor and other California Officers are not authorized to incur debt on behalf of the people of California."

Schwarzenegger acts quickly to defuse crisis in the making
In a stunning admission designed to douse a fast-moving political firestorm, Arnold Schwarzenegger launched his statewide tour of California yesterday with an apology in San Diego for having "behaved badly sometimes" toward women.

Schwarzenegger's mea culpa, delivered at the San Diego Convention Center to hundreds of supporters and journalists from around the world, came on the heels of a Los Angeles Times story that reported allegations by six women who said the Austrian-born actor had groped them. The unwanted advances occurred at various times over three decades, the newspaper reported.

Schwarzenegger Admired Hitler, Book Proposal Says
A film producer who chronicled Arnold Schwarzenegger's rise to fame as a champion bodybuilder in the 1970's circulated a book proposal six years ago that quoted the young Mr. Schwarzenegger expressing admiration for Adolf Hitler.

The book proposal by the producer, George Butler, included what were presented as verbatim excerpts from interviews with Mr. Schwarzenegger in the filming of the documentary "Pumping Iron." In a part of the interview not used in the film, Mr. Schwarzenegger was asked to name his heroes — "who do you admire most."

Six women who came into contact with Arnold Schwarzenegger on movie sets, in studio offices and in other settings over the last three decades say he touched them in a sexual manner without their consent.

In interviews with The Times, three of the women described their surprise and discomfort when Schwarzenegger grabbed their breasts. A fourth said he reached under her skirt and gripped her buttocks.

A fifth woman said Schwarzenegger groped her and tried to remove her bathing suit in a hotel elevator. A sixth said Schwarzenegger pulled her onto his lap and asked whether a certain sexual act had ever been performed on her.

Gov. Davis signs workers' comp bill
Gov. Gray Davis on Tuesday signed a workers' compensation reform package he pledged will reduce high premiums for businesses -- a key issue in the recall campaign.

Exactly one week before the historic election that could cost him his job, the Democratic governor signed the legislation at a ceremony at the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce surrounded by Democratic lawmakers.

The legislation seeks to reduce costs by, among other things, establishing fee schedules for outpatient surgical centers, capping visits to chiropractors and repealing a vocational rehabilitation program for injured workers.

McClintock aide's writings an issue
As state Sen. Tom McClintock collected an endorsement from a well-known conservative leader in California on Tuesday, he distanced himself from a longtime aide after a report raised questions about the aide's religious writings.

McClintock, a GOP gubernatorial hopeful, said the role of deputy campaign manager John Stoos for the remaining days of the recall race was "under discussion."

California's Venezuelan recall candidate Pedro Miguel Camejo says Schwarzenegger's a sca
"Every poll shows that if Arianna dropped out, the Green Party would go up. The Green vote could turn out to be the most meaningful in the election by taking votes away from other replacement candidates."

Camejo says he's disappointed that GOP leaders are clambering to board the Schwarzenegger bandwagon and neglecting abortion, gay rights and gun control issues.  "The Arnold scam is succeeding ... he hides his politics, but it looks like he's going to win. Nobody knows what Swartzenegger's platform is ... he'll face a hostile Democrat-controlled Legislature ... so it won't be made easy for him."

Bustamante rejects polls, claims race is 'dead heat'
Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante made a quick swing Tuesday through the Grand Central Market downtown to claim he was in a "dead heat" with Republican front-runner Arnold Schwarzenegger.

With the election just a week away, Bustamante said he wouldn't drop out of the gubernatorial race and insisted his campaign was still advancing.

"This campaign is live," he said. "It is absolutely live."

Democrats prepare post-vote challenges
Setting the stage for a post-election legal challenge to the recall vote, Democrats are set to launch a national fund-raising campaign today to help pay for any legal action needed if Tuesday's election on Gov. Gray Davis' future is close.

Seeking to avoid what they called "another Florida-style fiasco," the state party and a national Democratic group called Democrats for America's Future said they hope to raise $100,000 to place poll watchers around the state Tuesday and to help with post-election legal challenges that may come up.

Smokers' candidate is soured on the process
Here's how Ned Roscoe has been campaigning for governor in Tuesday's recall election:

The Libertarian Party candidate travels to one of the 138 discount cigarette stores his family owns in California. Roscoe approaches customers, but he doesn't ask right away for their votes. That, he says, would be as rude as propositioning them. Instead, he asks if they feel they are taxed enough. Do they think there are enough laws on the books? Do they think California should do more to compete with neighboring states for business?

When they answer yes to all the questions, he springs it on them: He's their man.

"If I just had that conversation 10 million times, I'd be your next governor," he said.

Camejo's political lessons came early
Peter Miguel Camejo learned almost everything he cares to know about American politics in another country.

As a child of privilege and divorce who lived on Long Island with his mother, he spent summers visiting his father, a wealthy Venezuelan land developer.

During one trip to South America, the teenage Camejo looked out at the slums surrounding one of his dad's coastal resorts and asked him if he believed in God.

"Pedrito," Daniel Camejo told his son, gesturing toward the distant shanties where the laborers who built the resort lived. "If God existed, would he allow this?"

Huffington Ends Gubernatorial Bid
The field of candidates is narrowing in California's recall race against Governor Gray Davis. Independent candidate Arianna Huffinton has withdrawn, and other contenders are weighing their options.

Ms. Huffington polled just two percent in latest survey, released recently. Tuesday, she made this announcement on the "Larry King Live" show.

"I'm pulling out and I'm going to concentrate every ounce of time and energy working to defeat the recall because I've realized that that's the only way now to defeat Arnold Schwarzenegger," she said.

Mix of poll results makes soup of recall predictions - There's agreement only on unpredictability of voters
If polls are a snapshot of public opinion, California voters have put together a virtual photo album.

In late August, Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante appeared to be the people's choice for governor. In late September, it was Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger. First, the recall of Gov. Gray Davis was way ahead, then too close to call, and now it is ahead again.

Differences in polling methods and statistical anomalies provide some explanation for wide-ranging results.

But the wildly bouncing numbers seem to confirm about the only fact pollsters can agree on: Recall opinions are so volatile that no one can say with confidence where the electorate will be on Tuesday.

"You're shooting at a moving target," said independent pollster John Zogby. "No one has a history of this kind of election."

A Confident Schwarzenegger Steps Up Attacks on Davis
Appealing to Californians' feelings of a loss of control and joblessness, Arnold Schwarzenegger declared war today on Gov. Gray Davis and business as usual in Sacramento.

Promising deliverance without sacrifice and a balanced budget without tax increases, Mr. Schwarzenegger made it clear that he considered the recall race in its final days to have boiled down to two choices: himself and Mr. Davis.

Darrell Issa Hits Number One on Weekly List of Top Ten Conservative Idiots
Once upon a time there was an idealistic, principled conservative named Darrell Issa. And Darrell thought that the governor of California, the evil Gray Davis, was doing a terrible, terrible job of looking after the state (despite the fact that all the governors in the country were in trouble because of King George W. Bush's irresponsible fiscal policies). So Darrell decided that he would spend millions of dollars of his own hard-earned money to try and boot the evil Gray Davis out of office, and install someone more suitable, such as himself. Darrell was a good, honest person who hadn't stolen a car in years, and who truly, deeply cared about the people of California. "Like you, I've watched with increasing alarm as Gray Davis has systematically run California into the ground," he wrote on his campaign website in a very concerned manner. But then one day a groping Austrian beefcake arrived in town and declared that he was going to run for governor. Now, Darrell knew that the groping Austrian beefcake was very popular and would eat him for breakfast, so he cried like a little girl and dropped out of the race. But then a strange thing happened. Suddenly, Darrell realized that all the Republicans in California might get so confused between Conservative Candidate No. 1, the groping Austrian dope-smoking gangbanger, and Conservative Candidate No. 2, Mr. Nobody, that they might split their vote and let the evil Democrat Cruz Bustamante win. And Darrell couldn't have that. So, despite being the person who helped initiate, finance, and collect the signatures for the whole process in the first place, Darrell started going around telling people to vote against the recall - and keep the evil Gray Davis in power! Because believe it or not, it wasn't really about taking a principled stand to protect the people of California from a crappy governor after all. No, it was simply Darrell Issa trying to come up with a sneaky way to replace a duly-elected Democratic governor with a Republican. What a rotten bastard. The end. (Note: Our hero flip-flopped again last Friday and endorsed the beefcake .)

Threat of spoiler's role doesn't faze McClintock
McClintock has stuck firmly - obstinately, some say - to his pledge to race to the end, even at the risk of splitting the GOP vote and allowing Democrats to stay in power if Gov. Gray Davis is recalled.

"I have never been popular in the country club wing of the Republican party," McClintock said in interview Sunday before another full day of campaigning. "I've always drawn my strength from grassroots voters, and I'm quite content with that."

For 'Gotcha' Reporting, The Getting's Not So Good
In the California recall, Arnold Schwarzenegger has adopted a calculated strategy of minimizing contact with reporters while seeking such friendly inquisitors as Oprah Winfrey, Howard Stern, Larry King and conservative radio hosts. Despite an avalanche of negative headlines about his inaccessibility, his lack of specifics and his wild-and-crazy bodybuilding days, the actor remains at the head of the pack to replace Gov. Gray Davis.

"The press corps has been giving him a hard time," says Schwarzenegger strategist Mike Murphy. "But he's not a traditional candidate -- that's his strength. We go on Larry King and talk to 2 million people instead of showing up at the L.A. Press Club to talk to 300 on C-SPAN."

The Schwarzenegger Maneuver
Talk about "gotcha" – they called it a debate! The highly touted "debate" among the best-known candidates for California governor came off as a circus.

This debate got mountains of attention because it included the best known of the best-known candidates, Arnold Schwarzenegger. The actor-businessman, would-be politician draws cameras and crowds simply by breathing. And Arnold's been deep breathing.

Combine his selective media campaigning with his refusal to debate competitors and you have a sure way to garner even more media attention. It's the Greta Garbo ploy! Another page from the Hollywood book – and it works.

Arnold looks set to topple Davis
Arnold Schwarzenegger appears poised to terminate Gray Davis, and the Democratic governor is reacting like an underdog by airing attack ads and trying to goad the Hollywood action hero into a head-to-head debate.

A week before California's recall election, a decisive majority favors tossing Davis, and the only Democrat running to replace him, Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, trails Schwarzenegger, a USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup Poll says. The poll finds that Davis and Bustamante have failed to excite much of their Democratic base and that more than two-thirds of independents — crucial swing voters — say Davis should go.
