Schmidt was in jams in the third, fourth and fifth and seventh. With bases full in the third, Sammy Sosa popped out foul to first. In the fourth, Patterson ended a threat with his third straight strikeout."We hit the ball good off Schmidt," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said, "but he was able to get strikeouts to get out of trouble."
